Setting Your Goals

At this moment, when you or someone you love is struggling with an addiction, you might not think that goals are important.  Nothing can be further from the truth.  Starting out with goals means a PLAN of ACTION. You are not helpless and hopeless. No matter how long or how ingrained you think your addiction (or other) is, you are in charge and you can take steps to change your life.  No one else can do this for you, and many times, behavior continues just because we know that someone wants us to stop.  This is yet another excuse to continue with our habits.  And, we all know this deep down inside.

Yes, people have suffered real trauma.  Sometimes, our "attitudes" are what get us in trouble.  Many people think they can't even socialize without their habit, compulsion or addiction, even while it is breaking down the fabric of our lives.

The very first requirement of any goal is the willingness to change.  Start with that and you are already half way there.  There are real steps that you need to take to head toward that goal and it is never too late, no matter what the situation.  When we are "in it", we have a hard time seeing that things can change for us.  Broken relationships, finances, health and more contribute to our inability to not see a good outcome.  It is your inherent right to have a good life, but it takes the courage to want to change. What you don't know is that no matter what the situation you find yourself in, that there are people who have come back from much worse.  This isn't to discount what you are going through, but believe it or not things can always get worse....AND BETTER!

The Recovery Community is buillt around supporting one another.  We all want you and your family to know that there is always hope.  And if you can hold on to that little shred of light, you can do it, and you can start right now, today.  If you are deep in an addiction or compulsion or have a depression problem, the first thing you need to do is get your head straight, and this means seeking medical help.  The people involved in this kind of help see this every day and you don't have to be embarrassed or worry about "who will know". Believe me, everyone that knows you already knows or suspects.  We aren't as good as hiding this as we think we are.

1) Get to a medical facility to help you get rid of the core addiction you are dealing with, or if it is depression, see a physician immediately. Everyone needs help sometimes.  Having our pride stand in the way is just another way our egos are stopping us from getting well.  Remember from cartoons, the little devil and the little angel sitting on someone's shoulder?  This is our self talk which goes on in a regular conversation all the time.  This is the WORD of YOU.  Your ego and emotions will try to stop you by saying negative things in your mind, but have enough courage to just take the first step.  Once we get our thinking process clear, we can beging to make goals to get back on our feet. But you must be able to think clearly, and with any compulsion ruling the day, you cannot do this.

2) If you have an active chemical addiction, the best thing to do is get yourself in an inpatient program, even if it is a short term program.  If you have to work and cannot do this, get in an outpatient program and fill up your non-work time with recovery.  The basics of these programs will let you begin to think clearly and this is what you need to do to set your plan of action into motion.  Getting out of "intertia" and the loop that keeps you stuck is the goal.

3) As you progress, you will beging to see things differently.  Our thinking starts to finally clear and we begin to have the ability to look at things happening in our lives withour the utter hopelessness that we were used to.  You can see our "On Line Programs" page and participate in Goal Setting, Mastermind Groups and more to get on track.  Our goal is to help you see that life can be good and you are worth it, no matter what or where you find yourself right now.
